A sofa is the piece of furniture you’ll use the most and will be the centerpiece of your living area. Everything revolves around this piece of furniture. It will be a big part of your home life, with many people using and enjoying it on different occasions.

Therefore, we are talking about a long-term investment and a difficult choice to make. This is why it is worth spending some time researching it, so that the couch fully meets your needs. But where do you start and what do you need to take into account? Don’t stress, that’s what we’re here for.

In general, the perfect sofa should be comfortable, stylish, durable and must definitely fit the space like a glove. Let’s go over some key features you’ll need to factor in.

  • Size

Size is probably the most important feature to look out for. A wrong couch in terms of size can instantly make your space feel empty or narrow, without being able to move around in it.

If you have a relatively small living room, then a two-seater sofa is perfect for you. It fits two or even three people, and by combining it with a footstool, you instantly have the most comfortable solution. If you have a little more space, you can easily switch to a three-seater sofa, which doesn’t make a huge difference in size but gives you extra seating. Combine this with a coffee table you instantly have a more complete-looking living room.

In case you need more seating but don’t have enough space, a corner sofa would be the best solution. These sofas often have hidden features, such as additional storage space, plus mechanisms that turn them into full-sized beds, and are perfect for when you have extra guests.

Don’t forget that some style choices can affect the appearance of the size of your furnishings, e.g. fewer decorative cushions can make the sofa look larger. Don’t forget, it’s always very important to accurately measure your space so that the sofa fits into it and doesn’t obstruct your movements around the room.

  • Shape

The shape of a sofa is all about its functionality, but also the aesthetic you want to give to your living space. A corner sofa is ideal for a relaxed family room, but it’s also the best (and smartest) solution for dividing an open-plan space, such as in cases where the living room and dining room are combined.

In any case, no matter how big your space is, you don’t want to buy two identical sofas. It’s better to choose sofas of different seatings, such as a three-seater and a two-seater or an armchair, to give your space an interesting variety and flexibility. This is also extremely helpful in case you want to redecorate or make changes in the future.
