A dining table set is one of the most important pieces of furniture in your home. It is not just a place for eating, but also the place where you will create unforgettable moments with your loved ones. It is the heart of your home; the furniture that will make your space feel “homey” and become an integral part of your daily life. This should certainly not be an impulse purchase. Below, you will find the primary basic elements you should pay attention to when choosing your dining set.

– Usage

The first thing you should think about is your needs and usage. What is the daily routine of the people who live in the house? Yes, you will use it for dining and gatherings, but will you eat in the dining room every day? Will you also use it as a workspace or will you only use it for special occasions?

If there are young children, for example, perhaps a table made of stain-absorbing material might not be the best choice. Furthermore, if you often organize gatherings for meals, the dining table you choose should be able to accommodate the number of people you often invite. Your dining room should enrich your lifestyle, not hinder it.

A good rule of thumb is to buy for the home you currently live in. Even if you plan to move to a larger home in the future, there’s no point in buying a dining set that won’t actually fit in your current space!

– Size

The dining table should comfortably fit in your space. If it’s bigger than it needs to be it will make the space look small, and if it’s smaller it will make the room look out of proportion. Of course, you should also consider the space around the table so that you can move around comfortably.

Once again, a measuring tape is your best friend. You will need accurate measurements of the space and the distances at which the table and chairs will be placed. A good idea is to use books or paper-tape to create a mockup table in your space. This will help you see how much space a table of a certain size would take up.

A general rule of thumb is to leave at least 100 centimeters of space between the table and the wall or other furniture in the room. Ideally, the dining table should not only be the right length but also the right height. Most tables are about 76 cm high. It’s a good idea to take this into consideration if you have decorations that will be placed on the table or lighting fixtures hanging over it.

And of course, don’t forget the chairs! You’ll need at least 20cm of space between a chair and the table surface. Also, keep in mind that you need the necessary space so that your guests can sit, stand up and move around the table comfortably!
